Last night, Elder Brian Burgess went to the hospital in Puebla, Mexico, with an intense stomach ache and vomiting. He had also lost feeling in his hands and feet, which was of great concern.
Elder Burgess was met at the hospital by his Mission President, and was helped with translation as medical professionals performed a variety of tests to assess the problem. They quickly diagnosed that he did not have an amoeba or parasite (which is very common in Mexico, and easy to deal with). Instead, Elder Burgess has a bacterial infection in his stomach. This is also common and easily treated with antibiotics, which he began receiving intravenously last night.
This evening, Elder Burgess had a slight fever, so his doctor wants to keep him on intravenous antibiotics over night tonight, with the expectation that he will be able to be discharged tomorrow. As for the numbness in his hands and feet, both the doctors last night and the specialist today said that it is very common with extreme vomiting to lose electrolytes, especially potassium, which can cause numbness. Today Elder Burgess has regained the feeling in both his hands and feet.
The Mission President describes the hospital where Elder Burgess is being treated as comparable to a hospital in Salt Lake City, and assures his complete confidence that Elder Burgess is receiving great care. He also said that he and Elder Burgess's mission companion gave him a Priesthood blessing last night where he was promised a complete recovery.
