The Rains Came Down and the Floods Came Up - Sister Lindsey Jeppson

Written by Sister Lindsey Jeppson, serving in the Arizona Mesa Mission / Mesa Temple Visitors' Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, speaking Spanish.

Matthew 7:24-27

"Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."

So last Monday, I think I told you about the rain we got, but I don't remember what details I gave  you. Last Monday, at 2 a.m. we were awakened by lightening and thunder. It rained all night long, and rain even started coming through the window. When we woke up, we went outside to find a pond in the backyard. The members we live with have a pool, and the pool was just about overfilling with water. It rained until about noon. So for about 12 hours. Later that day we saw pictures of people swimming and canoeing in areas that filled with water.

Do you want to hear the results of the rain?? We got a record breaking amount of 3.5 inches of rain in a 12 hour period. Some parts of Mesa were evacuated because of flooding (my old area included). Missionaries were called in to help people evacuate and help save some of their belongings. They said that the water was knee deep throughout the streets.

On Friday night, we all got a message to meet at a stake center early the next morning to help. By this time, all the water was gone, but the damage still remained. So Saturday morning, at 7 a.m., 225 missionaries gathered together to provide service for these families. We were there until about 1 p.m. LONGEST day ever.

It was really neat to help. Everyone who was affected were just so humbled. We walked the streets and just knocked doors offering help. One door we knocked was a couple covered in tattoos and earrings. They were both smoking and drinking coffee. They obviously were exhausted. I was expecting to hear them say, "no, that's ok, we're not interested," but they said "thank you so much for all you are doing. It's inspiring to see these many young people out here helping. We were telling our
kids to notice the good people in the world. So thank you."

We have a lot to learn from this. I want to refer back to the scripture. The wise man built his house upon the rock and when the rains and floods came, the house stood still. The foolish man built his house upon the sand, and when the rains and floods came, the house fell, and great was the fall. We need to make sure we have a strong spiritual foundation because that's what will help us when the
storms of life come.

Other than the flood, we had an interesting week. We had a therapist come in for preparation meeting and talk about being happy! It was so inspiring. We also are teaching a Jewish man over the phone. That's an experience. He doesn't believe Jesus Christ is the Savior. But he finds the Book of Mormon very interesting. I'm learning so much by teaching him, it's crazy.

In our area we are still working on finding new investigators. We are teaching a lot, but no one really is progressing. There is this one couple, and I have talked about her before. We'll call them Maria y
Pablo. The missionaries before me dropped them because they kind of stopped progressing. He disappeared because he felt pressured, and she just wanted to support him. Three weeks ago we stopped by again and Maria was SOO happy. She has come to church every Sunday since. On Friday we visited them and they made us banana splits. It was so fun! We talked about baptism. She is so ready, and he could be but he wants to take it paso a paso. We're praying and fasting for them.
They are so great!

Anyway! Hope all is going well! Love
